How to Conserve Your Battery During an Emergency

  • Use text messages,

e-mail or social media to exchange information with your family and friends. In addition to using more of your battery, calls can tie up the wireless network and prevent emergency workers from communicating.

  • Turn on power savings mode

    and airplane mode.

  • Turn off push notifications,

    Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and non-essential apps.

Review our Emergency Preparedness Checklist.

  • Save emergency numbers and email addresses in your devices for police, fire, hospital, schools and other essential contacts.
  • Designate two “in case of emergency” (ICE) contacts on your phone: one local and one out of town.
  • Download apps from FEMA, AccuWeather and local news stations from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
  • Keep up-to-date “before” photos or videos of the rooms and exterior of your property on your phone for insurance purposes.
  • Buy a waterproof case for your phone.
  • Keep a spare car charger or external charging device with you or stored in a waterproof bag.
  • If you have advance warning of a storm or emergency, start charging your devices as soon as possible.
