Important Notice for California Prepaid Wireless Customers

As a customer of prepaid wireless telecommunication services in California, you are subject to certain surcharges, taxes and fees assessed on the retail purchase price of prepaid wireless telecommunications.

Emergency Telephone Users (911) Surcharge

  • The Office of Emergency Services has set the rate of Emergency 911 use at $0.30 per access line per month for calendar year 2022.

Prepaid MTS Local Charges

The California Public Utility Commission has ordered that effective January 1, 2022, Local Utility Users Taxes apply to prepaid wireless plans for those municipalities and counties that have enacted such a surcharge. The rate can vary from 0% to 9%.

Example of a $40 Prepaid Wireless Replenishment as of January 1, 2022

California 911 Surcharge: $0.30 per line replenished

PREPAID MTS LOCAL CHARGES: $40 Replenishment x 5.00% Surcharge Rate = $2.00
