Winners Determined by Local Community Votes

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan. 21, 2015) – U.S. Cellular and the Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club in Morgantown are kicking off the seventh annual Black History Month Art Contest, which honors the many contributions of African-Americans and encourages young people to learn more about these influencers on Martin Luther King Day.

Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club members are encouraged to research and learn more about African-American role models and their important contributions to society. And then create and submit an original 8.5 x 11 portrait representing the figure of their choice using any art medium from any point in history, including present day.

"We highly encourage every Mountaineer member to participate because we have so much talent here in Morgantown just waiting to be discovered," said Jack Brundige, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in the Mid-South. "This art contest lets us honor African-American leaders and celebrate our diversity."

The top 10 finalists' entries will be chosen by a panel from the Boys & Girls Club, and displayed at local U.S. Cellular stores, where the public will be invited to view and vote on the artwork from February 2 to 28. The top three artists - as determined by the number of votes - will receive prizes (including a $500 gift card) and recognition at an upcoming U.S. Cellular event.

"Our kids get excited about the contest every year and start to ask about it and the students always learn something new as they are researching," said Malina Alexander, assistant director of the Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club, "you never know which project may have a life long impact on inspiring a member."
