Winners Determined by Local Community Votes

LYNCHBURG, Va. (Jan. 20, 2015) – To help celebrate Martin Luther King Day this week, U.S. Cellular and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg are kicking off the second annual Black History Month Art Contest, which honors the many contributions of African-Americans and encourages young people to learn more about these current and historic influencers.

The Boys & Girls Club members in Lynchburg are encouraged to research and learn more about African-American role models and their important contributions to society. They are then invited to create and submit an original 8.5 x 11 portrait representing the figure of their choice using any art medium from any point in history, including present day.

"We look forward to seeing the creative artwork from the kids, and we encourage every member to participate to show off the local talent we have here," said Jack Brundige, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in the Mid-South. "At U.S. Cellular, we are committed to the education of young people, and this art contest gives us the opportunity to honor the creativity of our kids by honoring African-American leaders and celebrating our diversity."

The top 10 finalists' entries will be chosen by a panel from the Boys & Girls Club and then displayed at local U.S. Cellular stores. The public is invited to view and vote on the artwork from February 2 to 28, and the top three artists — as determined by the number of votes — will receive prizes:

  • $150 for 3rd Place
  • $200 for 2nd Place
  • $500 for 1st Place

"We are so excited to partner again on this program to help teach our children about an important part of our history," said Mark Sheehan, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg. "I can't wait to see the incredible artwork the children produce."
