Winners Determined by Local Community Votes

ROANOKE/CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (Jan. 21, 2015) – To help celebrate Martin Luther King Day this week, U.S. Cellular and the Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Virginia are kicking off the seventh annual Black History Month Art Contest, which honors the many contributions of African-Americans and encourages young people to learn more about these current and historic influencers.

Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Virginia members are encouraged to research and learn more about African-American role models and their important contributions to society. They are then invited to create and submit an original 8.5 x 11 portrait representing the figure of their choice using any art medium from any point in history, including present day.

"We look forward to seeing the creative artwork from the kids, and we encourage every Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Virginia member to participate to show off the talent we have here in the Roanoke & Christiansburg areas," said Jack Brundige, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in the Mid-South. "At U.S. Cellular, we are committed to the education of young people, and this art contest gives us the opportunity to honor the creativity of our kids by honoring African-American leaders and celebrating our diversity."

The top 10 finalists' entries will be chosen by a panel from the Boys & Girls Club and then displayed at local U.S. Cellular stores. The public is invited to view and vote on the artwork from February 2 to 28, and the top three artists - as determined by the number of votes - will receive prizes:

  • $150 for 3rd Place
  • $200 for 2nd Place
  • $500 for 1st Place

"We're excited to continue our longstanding partnership with U.S. Cellular to celebrate Black History Month and see who our membership chooses this year. It's such an interesting way to recognize, learn and celebrate this month. It not only makes an impression on our children, but on our community," said Laurie Gibbons, chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia.
