U.S. CELLULAR DATA CENTER TO SAVE MORE THAN $1 MILLION OVER FIVE YEARS THROUGH COMED SMART IDEAS FOR YOUR BUSINESS® PROGRAM

Schaumburg location made significant upgrades to be more energy-efficient

CHICAGO (Feb. 23, 2015) – For a national wireless provider serving millions of customers, having data centers that use a lot of energy comes with the territory. U.S. Cellular recognized that there was an opportunity to make its data center in Schaumburg, Ill., more energy-efficient. By utilizing ComEd's Smart Ideas for Your Business program, the company is on track to save more than $1 million in energy over the next five years, and the center became more sustainable and efficient in the process.

ComEd recently presented U.S. Cellular with a check for $266,000 in program incentive payments for the energy-saving changes that U.S. Cellular made that resulted in a permanent reduction in electricity consumption.

"At U.S. Cellular, we have made significant strides in updating our infrastructure to be more energy-efficient in our stores and offices, and we knew we could make a strong environmental impact with updates to this data center," said Kevin Lowell, vice president of engineering and network operations at U.S. Cellular. "The assistance that ComEd provided resulted in an immediate return on investment, and the benefits we see from the changes go beyond our data center to the environment."

After receiving a recommendation from ComEd on the actions the company could take to be more energy-efficient, U.S. Cellular made changes and upgrades that resulted in a savings of more than 3.2 million kilowatt hours per year. U.S. Cellular replaced less efficient uninterruptible power supply (UPS) infrastructure, installed roof-top economizers that bring in outside air to help with cooling needs and added hot and cold air containment systems. These changes resulted in the data center going from needing 30 air conditioning units down to 11.

"ComEd is pleased to offer our customers a suite of energy-efficient solutions that allows them to lower their energy use and meet sustainability goals," said Mike Guerra, vice president of External Affairs and Large Customer Solutions at ComEd. "ComEd's Smart Ideas for Your Business has helped business customers, like U.S. Cellular, save more than $400 million in electricity costs and reduce their energy usage by more than 5.1 billion kWh, or the equivalent to energizing 560,000 homes for one entire year."
