South Medford High School Wins $25,000 in U.S. Cellular's "Battle of the Stands" Competition
Medford, Ore. (November 18, 2015) – South Medford High School is the winner of U.S. Cellular's "Battle of the Stands" competition and has won $25,000 to use however they choose. South Medford beat out seven other schools across the country by having the loudest and most engaged fans amongst the schools competing.
"We know we have the greatest fans here at South Medford, and we are very excited to have this money to improve our students' education experience," said Damian Crowson, principal of South Medford High School. "We want to thank U.S. Cellular for including us in the competition, and we can't wait to put the $25,000 to good use."
Throughout this high school football season, U.S. Cellular challenged eight schools in the "Battle of the Stands" competition to see which school had the loudest fans. The company measured the crowd cheers at designated games, and fans of the schools were also able to add their own "digital cheer" online. South Medford generated 158,390 total decibels from the game against Thurston High School and from the "digital cheers" on www.aseasonoftradition.com. They competed against other high schools in Illinois, Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
"We want to congratulate South Medford High School fans for bringing their enthusiasm and for being the loudest fans in the country," said Jeff Heeley, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in the Northwest market. "As a company that strives to be a part of our local communities, we were thrilled to see our friends, neighbors and the fans from all of the schools come together to support their football teams. We are excited to see how they use the money."
As part of U.S. Cellular's "A Season of Tradition" program, the company set out to celebrate the fans of high schools sports and some of the unique rituals that have been passed on over the years. Documentary videos, user submitted traditions and the final "Battle of the Stands" rankings can all be seen at www.aseasonoftradition.com.
