Jefferson, Iowa (March 23, 2015) – A bookstore, coffee shop, home and public library pop to mind when you think about Wi–Fi access. Planes, trains and automobiles are not the only transportation modes that offer Wi-Fi.

Some Iowa school districts have installed Wi-Fi on school buses. These vehicles equipped with high-tech technology allow students to complete online assignments and research as they travel to and from school-related activities, such as field trips, performances and sporting events, thanks to a ruggedized router from U.S. Cellular.

"At U.S. Cellular, we encourage finding new and innovative ways to bring the latest technology into schools to help improve education," said Mike Adams, U.S. Cellular's director of business sales in Iowa and Nebraska. "We continue to see schools utilize tablets in an effort to switch from print textbooks to digital versions on tablets. We want to help students stay connected to their schoolwork with wireless routers and nationwide coverage that works in cities and rural communities."

In mid-February, the Greene County Community School District's Board of Education unanimously approved the purchase of routers, antennas and a data plan through U.S. Cellular to equip two school buses with a wireless data connection.

Tim Buenz, Greene County's director of technology, came up with the connected bus idea after he visited with school district leaders at Cardinal Community School District in Eldon, Carroll Community School District and Pocahontas Area Community School. Local U.S. Cellular agent locations Jefferson Telecom and Ben Franklin/RadioShack provided Buenz with a data plan and the necessary equipment. The school district is using ruggedized BandLuxe routers and antennas for the roofs of the buses.

"The primary motivation for implementing Wi-Fi on the school buses was to help students keep up with their homework, so they can use their travel time more wisely," Greene County Superintendent Tim Christensen said. "The whole process has been a team effort between the school district staff and our business collaborators at U.S. Cellular, Jefferson Telecom and Ben Franklin/RadioShack. We appreciate everyone working to make this a positive opportunity for our students."
