Omaha School Nets $50,000 in Wireless Carrier's $1 Million Nationwide Contest

OMAHA, Neb., Nov. 18, 2011 – A feeling of excitement filled the air as St. Stephen the Martyr School celebrated its victory as a 2011 champion in U.S. Cellular's Calling All Communities campaign – an honor that comes with a $50,000 prize. An enthusiastic crowd of students, faculty, staff and community members packed the school's gym for the Friday afternoon assembly. A group of U.S. Cellular associates also attended to extend their congratulations.

The festivities included a special appearance by U.S. Cellular mascot, Cellby and a special raffle drawing which drew cheers as students received prizes such as $1,000 off of tuition for the 2012-13 school year, lunch with Principal Dr. Roseanne Williby and two friends at a favorite restaurant and Omaha Storm Chasers tickets.

St. Stephen the Martyr is among 17 schools across the country that won $50,000 in the wireless carrier's nationwide $1 million contest. Seymour Primary School in Seymour, Tenn., brought home the grand prize of $150,000 for garnering the most votes. Schools can choose how to use the money to enhance students' learning experience.

"These funds will help us reach even greater heights as we educate our future leaders," Williby said. "It's thrilling to see the hard work and dedication of parents, teachers, family and friends result in such a great reward. This parish demonstrated that anything is possible, especially when we work together as a community."

This is the third year that U.S. Cellular has awarded $1 million to schools through Calling All Communities. The campaign grew significantly this year, with more than 1.5 million votes cast for 2,700 schools nationwide. Since the program began in 2009, Nebraska schools have won $150,000.

"I am so proud to work for a company that gives back to the communities where we live and work," said Megan Goeke, U.S. Cellular's field marketing manager for Nebraska. "We know that now, more than ever, education must be a top priority for our kids to prepare them for a successful future. U.S. Cellular is proud to continue its commitment to education, and it's one of the reasons we have the happiest customers in wireless."

St. Stephen the Martyr, a preschool through eighth-grade school with 860 students, plans to use its winnings for art education.
