Crete School Ranks in Top 18 in the Nation in Wireless Carrier's $1 Million Contest

CRETE, Ill. (Nov. 10, 2011) – On Wednesday, U.S. Cellular associates joined students and faculty at Mother Teresa Catholic Academy in celebrating their $50,000 prize from the wireless carrier's national Calling All Communities campaign.

Students, faculty and community members gathered for a victory party in the school's gymnasium, which was filled with local U.S. Cellular representatives and balloons boasting the school's colors. The celebration featured a DJ, a school-wide choreographed dance and a formal congratulations from U.S. Cellular.

"This project goes to show that a very small group of people can change the world," said Sandra Robertson, principal of Mother Teresa Catholic Academy. "We want to make sure we keep up with technology and make good things happen, and the generosity of businesses like U.S. Cellular makes all the difference."

Since its inception three years ago, the Calling All Communities campaign has grown significantly with more than 1.5 million votes being cast for 2,700 schools nationwide. Chicagoland schools have won more than $350,000 through the campaign.

"This gift to Mother Teresa Catholic Academy will go such a long way," said Cristina Carlstrom, district sales manager for U.S. Cellular in Chicagoland. "U.S. Cellular is proud to continue our ongoing commitment to education, which is one of the reasons we have the happiest customers in wireless. Illinois communities continue to show their love for education by getting behind their schools and going for the win."

Through this year's Calling All Communities contest, a total of 17 schools received $50,000 each, and Seymour Primary School in Tennessee received the most votes and earned the top prize of $150,000. This year, Illinois claimed three Calling All Communities champions – along with Mother Teresa Catholic Academy, Woodland Elementary School in Joliet and Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School in Orland Hills each won $50,000.

Winnings can be used any way the school sees fit to enhance students' learning experience. Mother Teresa Catholic Academy, which is a new school created this year by St. Liborius in Crete and St. Mary School in Park Forest, plans to enhance their technology by purchasing laptops and smart boards for all classrooms.

"It's empowering for such a little school to do something so big," said Jen Karlin, physical education teacher at Mother Teresa Catholic Academy. "This is something that really brought this new school and the community together."
