Immaculate Conception School Brings Home $50,000 in Wireless Carrier's $1 Million Nationwide Contest

Columbia, Mo., Nov. 17, 2011 – Children cheered, noisemakers thundered and students introduced a new spin on the Gatorade bath as Immaculate Conception School celebrated its $50,000 win in U.S. Cellular's 2011 Calling All Communities campaign today. The students shredded thousands of voting cards into custom confetti, which they showered on their principal and vice-principal at an enthusiastic pep rally for the school and community.

Immaculate Conception is among 18 winners in the wireless carrier's nationwide $1 million contest.

"It was amazing to see a small school show the drive and dedication needed to achieve such a big goal," said Nathan Waddell, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Missouri. "U.S. Cellular is proud to continue our commitment to education, which is one of the reasons we have the happiest customers in wireless."

This is the third year that U.S. Cellular has awarded $1 million to schools through Calling All Communities. The campaign grew significantly this year, with more than 1.5 million votes being cast for 2,700 schools nationwide. This is the second year a Jefferson City-area school was crowned a Calling All Communities champion. In 2010, St. Francis Xavier in Taos, Mo., won $100,000.

"We would not be a Calling All Communities winner without the support and efforts of our parents, parishioners and community members," said Jill Struemph, principal of Immaculate Conception School. "We're thankful U.S. Cellular provided us with the opportunity to show our community spirit and give our students a chance to see what can happen when we work towards a common goal."

Winnings can be used any way the winning schools see fit to enhance students' learning experience. Immaculate Conception plans use the prize money to upgrade technology for the students.

Principal Struemph added, "In this day and age, funding is tough. We've seen our computers become more problematic and with this money we'll be able to get things upgraded and running much better and faster. We cannot express how grateful we are to U.S. Cellular and all in the community who helped us to win."

Through this year's Calling All Communities contest, a total of 17 schools received $50,000 each, Seymour Primary School in Seymour, Tenn., brought home the grand prize of $150,000 for garnering the most votes.
