Orland Hills School Ranks in Top 18 in the Nation in Wireless Carrier's $1 Million Contest

ORLAND HILLS, Ill. (Nov. 18, 2011) – On Thursday, U.S. Cellular associates joined students and faculty at Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School in celebrating its $50,000 prize from the wireless carrier's national Calling All Communities campaign.

Students, faculty and community members gathered for a victory party in the school's gymnasium, where the school's cheerleading team performed as the kindergarten class waved handmade signs that said, "Welcome, U.S. Cellular."

"When we won this prize, it felt like a dream had become reality," said Mary Iannucilli, principal at Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School. "This campaign has reenergized our entire school community and has created even stronger school spirit."

According to Iannucilli, three very active moms "lit the match that became the torch for this campaign."

"We participated in last year's campaign but came up short," said parent Julie Kohler. "We learned a lot from that, though, about the importance of being organized and getting out early."

"This was a great opportunity to be able to do something big for the school, because there aren't many chances to do that," said parent Meg Kulpinski.

Since its inception three years ago, the Calling All Communities campaign has grown significantly with more than 1.5 million votes being cast for 2,700 schools nationwide. Chicagoland schools have won $350,000 through the campaign.

"This gift to Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School will go such a long way," said George Kamba, area sales manager for U.S. Cellular in Chicagoland. "U.S. Cellular is proud to continue our ongoing commitment to education, which is one of the reasons we have the happiest customers in wireless. Illinois communities continue to show their love for education by getting behind their schools and going for the win."

Through this year's Calling All Communities contest, a total of 17 schools received $50,000 each, and Seymour Primary School in Tennessee received the most votes and earned the top prize of $150,000. This year, Illinois claimed three Calling All Communities champions – along with Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School, Woodland Elementary School in Joliet and Mother Teresa Catholic Academy in Crete each won $50,000.

Winnings can be used any way the school sees fit to enhance students' learning experience. Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School plans to purchase new technology, including a smart board for every classroom and providing students with tablets instead of traditional laptops.
