Series of Weekend Events Celebrate Completion of Phase 3

MEDFORD, Ore., May 14, 2009 – Ready to build on the dynamic economic impact generated in 2008 by the five-field baseball/softball complex, five multi-purpose fields and one baseball/softball field stand ready to draw thousands of new visitors to U.S. Cellular Community Park. This weekend, the new fields are home to a variety of athletic events, concerts and a movie, celebrating the completion of construction on Phase 3 of the park.

"When we began on the U.S. Cellular Community Park project we knew there was a definite need in the community and region for a park of this magnitude," said Medford Mayor Gary Wheeler. "Today marks another key piece in delivering on our promise, providing our residents and the Rogue Valley with first class facilities that are the envy of any community in the country."

Since approval of the park master plan in December 2003, the City of Medford Parks and Recreation Department sought out a community sponsor with strong ties to the community. This was found in U.S. Cellular whose investment in Oregon goes beyond its wireless products and services and extends directly to the community. In addition to the community park, U.S. Cellular and Medford Parks and Recreation Department enjoy a long-standing partnership presenting U.S. Cellular Movies in the Park for the past five years.

"This park will become the premier sports and recreational facility for not only our area but the entire Pacific Northwest," said Parks and Recreation Director Brian Sjothun. "This community so deserved a facility of this magnitude, as people in Medford and the Rogue Valley love to play and enjoy the parks that we have in the area."

Phase 3 involved the creation of a multi-purpose championship field with concessions and seating for as many as 1,700. Four additional multi-purpose fields, a new Lowry Lane entrance, two parking lots and a full-size baseball diamond were also completed during this phase of construction.

"U.S. Cellular Community Park is definitely a source of pride for our customers and our associates. Every time we see or hear a story about another great sports tournament or the positive economic impact generated in the community, it reinforces our commitment to the park and the community," said Heather Owens, director of sales for U.S. Cellular.

Opening events this weekend were organized by the Medford Parks and Recreation Department. They include a Southern Oregon Fuego soccer game, a Southern Oregon University spring football exhibition, a free youth football clinic conducted by Southern Oregon University coaches and players, NFL youth flag football games, youth and adult soccer games, youth and adult baseball games and a screening of Field of Dreams.

On Sunday, May 17, a free concert presented by Medford Medical Clinic and Opus Radio will be held on the Championship Field between 2 and 7:30 p.m. The concerts feature the bands RazzaMoJazz, Heart & Soul and The Rogue Suspects. A complete schedule of events can be found at
