Destiny is the 6th winning school announced in U.S. Cellular®'s Calling All Communities

DEL CITY, Okla., Feb. 26, 2009 - The loud roar of students and staff shook the gymnasium at Destiny Christian School when about 50 U.S. Cellular associates invaded their assembly to reveal that the school had won $100,000. Destiny Christian is the 6th winner announced in the company's 2009 "Calling All Communities" campaign. The nationwide contest encouraged the community to cast votes for their favorite schools during the holiday season.

"Our entire community can rejoice in this remarkable victory for our school and our students," said Jim Howard, principal of Destiny Christian School. "The support, hard work and faith that made this gift possible teach us all a valuable lesson about the strength of community spirit."

More than 120,000 votes were cast during the six-week contest. Destiny Christian School beat out more than 6,500 others nominated across the country to become one of 10 to share in U.S. Cellular's $1 million donation to benefit children's education.

"Destiny Christian was one of the winners who came from behind for a surprise upset in the final weeks," said Karen Ehlers, vice president of public affairs and communications for U.S. Cellular. "This school had not appeared on any of our Top 20 list throughout the campaign. It's inspiring how they used the fuel of their community pride to power from behind in the final weeks. They proved that the power of a determined community is unstoppable."

Howard said the prize couldn't have come at a better time for the school. "Our gym and high school classrooms collapsed in the ice storm of 2007," he said. "While we were able to rebuild the buildings enough to occupy them again this fall, there are several projects that are incomplete, like our locker rooms. These funds will help greatly in the building process. We appreciate so much that a company like U.S. Cellular is being supportive of education across America and in our community."

Each year U.S. Cellular donates more than $4 million to the United Way and non-profits serving its communities, and last year associates volunteered almost 10,000 hours. In 2008, the company donated nearly $300,000 to Oklahoma non-profit organizations.
