Humphrey is the 5th winning school announced in "Calling All Communities" Campaign

HUMPHREY, Neb., Feb. 23, 2009 - Students and faculty at Humphrey St. Francis School learned that their community spirit paid off today when U.S. Cellular associates ambushed an assembly to reveal that the school had won $100,000. Humphrey is the 5th of 10 winners to be announced in the company's 2009 "Calling All Communities" campaign. The nationwide contest encouraged the community to cast votes for their favorite schools during the holiday season.

"This last month has been excruciating and exciting while we waited for that call from U.S. Cellular," said Darron Arlt, principal of Humphrey St. Francis School. "Even if we didn't get the money we felt like we had already won. Our St. Francis community really enjoyed the challenge of rallying all of our supporters behind this cause. The morale and spirit of our school community has been through the roof!"

More than 120,000 votes were cast during the six-week contest. Fueled by continuous community support and a flurry of votes in the final weeks, Humphrey solidified its victory beating out more than 6,500 schools nominated across the country. The school will share U.S. Cellular's $1 million donation to benefit children's education with nine other winning schools.

"What makes this victory so fantastic is that this small community of 790 people gathered the massive support needed to surpass schools in communities 10 times its size," said Karen Ehlers, vice president of public affairs and communications for U.S. Cellular. "We hope this funding gives Humphrey St. Francis the financial boost it needs to tackle some projects that might have been put on hold. They successfully harnessed their community pride to win and they earned every penny."

Arlt said the money will make a huge impact on the small school with the big heart. "I'm willing to bet that this $100,000 is a higher percentage of our school budget than any other winning school," he said. "We have had no shortage of requests on how to spend the money. We have many needs but we will certainly spend it in a way that directly benefits our students."

Each year U.S. Cellular donates more than $4 million to the United Way and non-profits serving its communities, and last year associates volunteered almost 10,000 hours. In 2008, the company donated nearly $200,000 to Nebraska non-profit organizations.
