Calling All Communities FAQs

  1. What is Calling All Communities?
Calling All Communities (CAC) is one of two U.S. Cellular signature giving programs that will support education in our local communities in 2013. Now in its fifth year, CAC will award a share of $500,000 to 20 schools grades K–12, public or private, big or small, based on their ability to garner online votes from their community. Schools are free to use the prize however they see fit. The 20 schools that garner the most votes will each receive $25,000. This total contribution of $500,000 to schools in areas where we have retail presence is just one of the ways we are working to improve education in our local communities.
  2. When will the program take place?
CAC voting will begin on November 4 this year and run for three weeks, concluding on November 25. Winning schools will be announced in December.
  3. Which schools are able to participate in this program?
CAC is open to any public or private school grades K–12 where we have retail presence, except home schools and previous winners (please see Rule 3 of the Official Rules for more detail on school eligibility, including a list of eligible ZIP Codes corresponding to our retail presence). There is no other requirement for schools to participate.
  4. How can schools use the award?
Winning schools can use the funding for projects of their choice. Past winners have used their awards in a variety of ways, including creating a scholarship program, updating technology equipment, starting an arts or foreign language program, and purchasing new playground equipment. The important part is that the school gets to decide.
  5. Are schools that are in the same school districts, counties, cities or towns of a previous winning school able to participate?
Yes, the campaign is open to schools that are in the same school districts, counties, cities or towns of a previous winning school.

  1. How can community members vote for a school?
Community members will need to have internet access in order to vote, as voting will take place entirely online this year. There is no need to visit a store to obtain a voting code. Starting after 9:00 a.m. CST on November 4 through 11:59 p.m. CST on November 25, community members can visit www.uscellular.com to cast a vote for their favorite school. Voters will be asked to enter the requested information which includes state, email address, and birth date. There is a limit of one vote per person for the entire campaign. Voters must be 18 years of age or older to vote (19 or older in AL, NE).

  1. Why is the funding level this year different compared to previous years?
While the amount of funding for CAC has changed, U.S. Cellular's $1 million commitment to supporting education in our communities remains. As mentioned above, CAC is one of two signature giving programs this year. CAC will award a share of $500,000 in funding to the 20 schools across our retail footprint that garner the most community votes. Our second program, Calling All Teachers (CAT), will fund $500,000 worth of public school teachers' classroom projects in October in a subset of states where we have retail presence.
