BlackBerry® Tips

Dial a Phone Number Using Letters

The Phone application on the handheld automatically converts phone numbers that include letters into the associated numbers.

To key a phone number that contains letters, press the right Shift key or the Alt key and type.
The letters appear on your screen but the handheld translates them into the appropriate numbers when the call is made.

For example, to call 1-888-BUY-USCC (1-888-288-8722) from your handheld:

  1. Open the Phone application
  2. Type 1888
  3. Hold the Alt or right Shift key down and type BUYUSCC
  4. Click the trackwheel and click Call 1888BUYUSCC or press Enter. When the call is dialed, the letters are converted to numbers on the screen
  5. To end the call, hold down the Escape key

Placing a Call Using a Pause or Wait

You can insert a wait or pause to separate additional digits (for example, a password or extension) from the main telephone number. When dialing a phone number that contains a pause, the handheld will pause for two seconds before dialing the remaining numbers. When dialing a phone number that contains a wait, the handheld displays a Dial Extension screen prompting you to either dial the remaining numbers, skip the remaining numbers, or end the call.

To include a pause or wait while dialing a phone number:

  1. On the Home screen, click the Phone icon. The Phone screen appears
  2. With your cursor in the empty field at the top of the screen, type the first portion of the phone number
  3. To insert a pause in the phone number, press the N key
  4. To insert a wait in the phone number, press the B key
  5. Type the remainder of the phone number
  6. Press the Enter key. The phone number is dialed

To include a pause or wait in a phone number in your address book:

  1. On the Home screen, click the Address Book icon. The Find screen appears
  2. Open an existing Address Book entry or create a new one
  3. In the Work, Home, Mobile, or Pager field, type the first portion of the phone number
  4. To insert a pause in the phone number, press the N key
  5. To insert a wait in the phone number, press the B key
  6. Type the remainder of the phone number
  7. To save your changes, click the trackwheel and click Save
  8. To call the phone number you just saved, click the name of the contact person, then click Call <Contact Name>. The phone number is dialed.
