U.S. Cellular's Black History Month Art Contest Returns to Honor African-American Heroes

Local Residents Choose Winners by Viewing and Voting for Their Favorite Portraits Feb.3-28

ROANOKE, Va. (Jan. 22, 2014) – There are many inspirational African-Americans from Beyonce to President Barack Obama, Martin Luther King, Jr. toRosa Parks. That's why U.S. Cellular is collaborating with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia on the seventh annual Black History Month Art Contest, which honors the many contributions of African-Americans and encourages young people to learn more about these influencers.

"U.S. Cellular is committed to providing educational opportunities for children to celebrate our rich and diverse culture," said Jack Brundige, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in the Mid-South. "Through this contest, we're able to celebrate and reward children in our local communities for their artwork and creativity, while simultaneously honoring a host of African-American leaders."

Boys & Girls Club members are encouraged to research and learn more about African-American role models and their important contributions to society. And then create and submit an original 8.5 x 11 portrait representing the figure of their choice using any art medium from any point in history, including present day.

The top 10 finalists' entries will be chosen by a panel from the Boys & Girls Club, and displayed at local U.S. Cellular stores, where the public will be invited to view and vote on the artwork from February 3 to 28. The top three artists – as determined by the number of votes – will receive prizes (including a $500 gift card) and recognition at an upcoming U.S. Cellular event.

"We're excited to continue our longstanding partnership with U.S. Cellular to celebrate Black History Month and see who our membership chooses this year. It's such an interesting way to recognize, learn and celebrate this month. It not only makes an impression on our children, but on our community," said Laurie Gibbons, chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia.
