BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF SOUTHERN MAINE CELEBRATES EARTH DAY WITH U.S. CELLULAR

U.S. Cellular Associates Help Spruce Up Local School Grounds)

PORTLAND, Maine, April 22, 2010–In celebration of Earth Day, hundreds of U.S. Cellular associates nationwide are participating in volunteer projects with nonprofit organizations and schools to help make their communities a little "greener."

Locally, U.S. Cellular associates partnered with more than 20 children from the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maine to lead a clean-up of the organization's Riverton Clubhouse on Thursday, April 22 from2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

"We appreciate U.S. Cellular associates helping beautify our grounds after a long winter," said Tiffanie Panagakos, Riverton/Sagamore site director for the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Miane. "This Earth Day project is a wonderful volunteer activity that's engaging and sets a good example for everyone to help take care of our environment."

Nationwide, U.S. Cellular associates regularly participate in volunteer activities. Last year, they surpassed a company-wide challenge donating more than 30,000 hours in their communities.

"We love to get out in our communities," said Eric Conlon, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in New England. "Working with the Boys & Girls Club is always a blast, and volunteering our time on Earth Day makes it even more meaningful."

U.S. Cellular has incorporated eco-friendly business practices by offering customers the option to receive their bills electronically and pay them online. The company's industry-leading program Battery Swap allows customers to swap out their dead or dying battery for a fully-charged one at no cost. Since the program launched, more than 1 million batteries have been swapped out, keeping many from going to landfills.

Green measures have also been implemented in U.S. Cellular stores. All are equipped with energy-efficient ceramic metal halide lighting that reduces energy consumption by 25 percent as compared to traditional halogen lighting. More than 90 percent of all computers, equipment and appliances are Energy Star products which are designed to reduce environmental impacts caused by excessive energy use. Products with recycled content, such as carpet, ceilings and furniture, are also used to furnish all stores.
